The Easiest Way to Do the DNA Yo-Yo Trick (Beginner Guide: 2× World Champion)

There may be no modern yo-yo trick more famous than the DNA. You’ve probably seen some incredible versions online, with long spins, crazy variations, and advanced combos that can make the trick look almost impossible.

But here’s what most people don’t know: the beginner version of the DNA is much easier to learn than it looks.

With the right yo-yo, a few simple tips, and the right technique, you could land your first DNA much faster than you might think.

I’m Gentry Stein, a 2× World Yo-Yo Champion, and in this guide, I’ll show you the easiest method I use to teach beginners the DNA, step by step, starting with a responsive yo-yo.

What Is the DNA Yo-Yo Trick?

The DNA is a modern fingerspin yo-yo trick where the yo-yo spins horizontally on your finger while the string catches and spirals upward, creating a twisting helix shape that looks like a strand of DNA.

The trick combines a fingerspin with the return of the yo-yo. Once the yo-yo is spinning on your finger, the string catches the spinning yo-yo and begins to wrap, creating the signature spiral as the yo-yo returns toward your hand.

The DNA wasn't invented overnight. Fingerspins and DNA-style tricks evolved through decades of innovation within the yo-yo community, long before the trick became famous online or had the name we know today.

In the summer of 2020, I started posting TikToks featuring this style of fingerspin trick. Then, on August 1, one of those videos went viral. Someone commented that the spiraling string looked like DNA, and the name stuck.

Gentry Stein’s August 1, 2020 TikTok featuring the fingerspin trick that went viral and helped launch the DNA yo-yo trend.

Soon, players from all over the world began posting their own versions across social media, turning the DNA from a viral trick into a global yo-yo movement that helped introduce a new generation to modern yo-yoing.

Want to learn more about the trick’s history, evolution, and how it grew to more than a billion views worldwide? Read my Ultimate Guide to the DNA Yo-Yo Trick.

And while there are now countless advanced DNA variations, you don't have to start there. The responsive DNA gives beginners a much easier way to learn the core trick, and that's exactly where we're going to start.

Before You Learn the DNA: 4 Tricks to Learn First

The beginner DNA is easier than it looks, but I don't recommend jumping straight into it if you're brand new to these types of tricks.

Gentry Stein demonstrating four easy beginner yo-yo tricks to learn before the DNA: Helix, UFO, Sidewinder, and Tornado.

Before learning the DNA, there are four beginner tricks I recommend learning first: the Helix, UFO, Sidewinder, and Tornado. Each one teaches you a different part of the technique you'll eventually put together to land the DNA, including throwing at the right angle, landing a fingerspin, controlling the yo-yo, and managing string tension.

I teach all four tricks step by step in my 5 Beginner Yo-Yo Tricks to Learn Before Your First DNA guide, in the order I recommend learning them. Once you can do these, you'll have the foundational skills you need to start working on the DNA.

Step by Step: How to Do the DNA Yo-Yo Trick (Easy Method)

The easiest way to learn the DNA is with a responsive yo-yo designed for fingerspin tricks. With the right yo-yo, the responsive setup does much of the work for you. Once you land the fingerspin and line everything up correctly, the string catches and the DNA forms automatically.

Watch the full beginner DNA tutorial below, then follow along with the step-by-step written instructions, common mistakes, fixes, and pro tips.

Now, let’s break down exactly how to do the beginner DNA in five easy steps.

Step 1: Throw the Yo-Yo at an Angle

Gentry Stein demonstrating step 1 of how to do the DNA yo-yo trick using the easy beginner method in a World Champion tutorial.Start with a strong throw at about a 45° angle. Unlike a straight throw with a yo-yo, the beginner DNA starts with an angled throw so the yo-yo can naturally tilt sideways.

Make sure you throw the yo-yo hard. You need a fast, powerful spin for the yo-yo to balance on your finger and have enough spin to complete the DNA.

Step 2: Raise the Yo-Yo in Front of Your Belly Button

Gentry Stein demonstrating step 2 of how to do the DNA yo-yo trick, letting the yo-yo tilt sideways using the easy beginner method.

After the throw, raise the yo-yo up so it's just in front of your belly button and let it naturally start to tilt sideways.

Be patient here. The 45° throw allows the yo-yo to slowly tilt over on its own, so don't rush it.

Step 3: Line Up Your Pointer Finger Under the Yo-Yo

Gentry Stein demonstrating step 3 of the easy beginner DNA yo-yo trick, positioning his opposite pointer finger underneath the yo-yo for the fingerspin.

Bring your opposite pointer finger directly underneath the yo-yo and wait for it to continue tilting over.

Line up your pointer finger as close as possible to the fingerspin cup without actually touching the yo-yo.

Step 4: Let the Yo-Yo Fall Onto Your Finger

Gentry Stein demonstrating step 4 of the easy beginner DNA yo-yo trick, letting the yo-yo naturally fall onto his finger for the fingerspin.

As the yo-yo finishes turning sideways, let it naturally fall onto your finger.

Don't rush the fingerspin or push your finger into the yo-yo. This is one of the biggest mistakes beginners make and can cause the yo-yo to pop right back to your hand.

Gentry's Tip: Let the yo-yo do the work. Keep your finger ready underneath it and let the yo-yo naturally fall onto your finger as it tilts over.

Step 5: Line Up Your Top Hand and Let the DNA Form

Gentry Stein demonstrating step 5 of the easy beginner DNA yo-yo trick, lining up his top hand with the yo-yo during the fingerspin.

Once the yo-yo is spinning on your finger, line up your top hand (the hand your string is attached to) with the yo-yo.

Keep your top hand lined up as the yo-yo spins. With a responsive yo-yo, the string will catch automatically and begin wrapping around itself to form the DNA.

Once the DNA forms, let the yo-yo return to your hand. You just did the DNA!

DNA Not Working? Common Mistakes & Pro Tips

These are the most common problems beginners run into when learning the DNA and how to fix each one.

The Yo-Yo Swings Away From You

The mistake: You're throwing the yo-yo too far outward.

Gentry Stein showing the wrong vs. right throw technique for the beginner DNA yo-yo trick, including proper angle, direction, and power.

👉 How to fix it: Keep the yo-yo in front of you. Throw down while maintaining the 45° angle, rather than throwing it away from your body.

The Yo-Yo Isn't Tilting Sideways Correctly

The mistake: Your throw angle may be too extreme or too straight.

Gentry Stein demonstrates too straight, too angled, and correct throw angles for learning the beginner responsive DNA yo-yo trick.

👉 How to fix it: Aim for about a 45° angle. Too much angle can make it harder to get a powerful throw and enough spin, while throwing too straight makes the yo-yo take longer to tilt sideways.

The Yo-Yo Doesn't Have Enough Spin

The mistake: Your throw isn't powerful enough.

Gentry Stein showing how to throw harder for more spin when learning the beginner responsive DNA yo-yo trick.

👉 How to fix it: Throw harder. The yo-yo needs to be spinning fast enough to balance on your finger and still have enough power to complete the DNA.

You Can't Land the Yo-Yo on Your Finger

The mistake: You're rushing the fingerspin or pushing your finger into the yo-yo.

Gentry Stein demonstrates the wrong and correct way to position your finger when landing the beginner DNA yo-yo trick fingerspin.

👉 How to fix it: Be patient and let the yo-yo do the work. Get your pointer finger into position underneath the yo-yo and let the yo-yo naturally fall onto your finger as it tilts over. Pushing your finger into the yo-yo can make it pop back to your hand, this is the biggest mistake I see beginners make.

The Yo-Yo Is on Your Finger, but the DNA Won't Form

The mistake: Your string hand isn't lined up directly above the yo-yo.

Gentry Stein demonstrates correct string-hand alignment above the yo-yo to form the beginner responsive DNA yo-yo trick.

👉 How to fix it: Once you land the fingerspin, keep your string hand directly above the yo-yo. With a responsive yo-yo, this allows the string to catch around the yo-yo and form the DNA as it winds back toward your hand.

What Is the Best Yo-Yo for the DNA?

The best yo-yo for the DNA depends on where you are in your yo-yo journey.

If you're learning your first DNA, a responsive yo-yo makes the trick much easier. But as your skills improve, moving to an unresponsive yo-yo opens the door to longer spins, more advanced DNA variations, and tricks that simply aren't possible with the beginner method.

Here's the progression I recommend:

Beginner: Learn Your First DNA With the Vyral

If you're learning the DNA for the first time, start with the Vyral.

Vyral responsive plastic beginner yo-yo with dedicated fingerspin hub for learning the DNA trick

I designed the Vyral specifically to make modern beginner tricks like fingerspins and the DNA easier to learn. Its fingerspin hub helps your finger lock into place during the fingerspin, while its stable polycarbonate body and responsive setup make it beginner-friendly and easier to control while you're learning.

Most importantly, the responsive setup lets you learn the easy DNA method taught in this guide before worrying about binds or more advanced unresponsive techniques.

The Vyral is also available as part of the Yo-Yo Master Pack, a three-yo-yo progression designed to take you from your first throw all the way to unresponsive play.

What to Learn After the Beginner DNA

Once you can land the responsive DNA consistently, the next step is learning unresponsive yo-yoing.

Gentry Stein demonstrating how to bind an unresponsive yo-yo, the first essential trick every unresponsive player needs to learn

Unlike a responsive yo-yo, an unresponsive yo-yo won't return to your hand with a simple tug. You'll first need to learn a bind, which is the technique used to make an unresponsive yo-yo return.

From there, you can start working toward the unresponsive DNA, where you'll have more spin time and control to learn longer DNAs and more advanced variations.

    Beginner DNA Yo-Yo Trick FAQs

Here are answers to the most common questions beginners have when learning the DNA yo-yo trick, including common mistakes, pro tips, choosing the right yo-yo, mastering the fingerspin, and progressing to the unresponsive DNA.

What is the DNA yo-yo trick?

The DNA is a fingerspin yo-yo trick where the yo-yo spins horizontally on your finger while the string catches and spirals upward, creating a twisting helix that looks like a strand of DNA. Fingerspins and DNA-style tricks evolved through decades of innovation within the yo-yo community, long before the trick became known as the DNA.

In 2020, one of my videos featuring this style of trick went viral, and someone commented that the spiraling string looked like DNA. The name stuck, and players around the world began posting their own versions across social media, helping turn the DNA into a global online yo-yo movement and introducing a new generation of players to modern yo-yoing.

For the full story behind the trick, its history, evolution, and how it grew to more than a billion views worldwide, read my Ultimate Guide to the DNA Yo-Yo Trick.

Is the DNA yo-yo trick hard?

The DNA yo-yo trick looks harder than it actually is, especially when you start with the responsive beginner method taught in this guide. Instead of trying to learn the entire trick at once, you can break the DNA down into a few core skills: throwing at the right angle, controlling the yo-yo as it tilts sideways, landing the fingerspin, managing string tension, and lining up your string hand correctly to form the DNA.

If you're brand new, I recommend learning the Helix, UFO, Sidewinder, and Tornado first. Each one teaches a different skill you'll eventually use in the DNA. You can learn all four with step-by-step tutorials in my 5 Beginner Yo-Yo Tricks to Learn Before Your First DNA:

Using the right setup can also make the DNA much easier to learn. A responsive fingerspin yo-yo like the Vyral helps your finger lock into place and allows the string to catch and form the DNA automatically once everything is lined up correctly. Pairing it with DNA String can make learning even easier by preventing string tension from building up, so you can spend less time untwisting your string and focus on practicing smoother, longer DNAs.

How do you do the DNA yo-yo trick?

To do the DNA yo-yo trick, throw the yo-yo hard at about a 45° angle, raise it in front of your belly button, and let it naturally tilt sideways. Position your opposite pointer finger underneath the yo-yo and let it fall onto your finger for the fingerspin. Once it’s spinning on your finger, line up your top hand (the hand your string is attached to) directly above the yo-yo. With a responsive yo-yo, the string will catch and wrap automatically, creating the spiral that forms the DNA.

How long does it take to learn the DNA yo-yo trick?

How long it takes to learn the DNA yo-yo trick depends on your skill level and whether you've already learned the foundational tricks that prepare you for the DNA. Some players can land their first DNA within an hour, while complete beginners may take several days or even weeks. Learning the Helix, UFO, Sidewinder, and Tornado first can make the DNA easier because each trick teaches a different part of the technique you'll eventually put together to land it.

What type of yo-yo is best for the DNA trick?

The best yo-yo for the DNA trick depends on your skill level. For beginners, a responsive yo-yo designed for fingerspins, like the Vyral, is the easiest option because it allows the string to catch and form the DNA automatically once you land the fingerspin. As you progress, an unresponsive fingerspin yo-yo, like the DNA Yo-Yo, gives you longer spin times and more control for advanced DNA tricks. For the highest level of DNA performance, the DNA King features self-centering fingerspin technology that helps guide the yo-yo toward the center of your finger for longer, smoother fingerspins and more advanced DNA variations.

Why does my yo-yo string keep twisting when I do the DNA?

When practicing the DNA yo-yo trick, your string can become increasingly twisted after repeated attempts. This is called string tension, and too much of it can make the string twist, bunch up, or tangle and make it harder to perform a smooth DNA.

There are a few ways to fix it. You can take the string off your finger, let it hang freely and untwist, then run your fingers down the string to straighten it out. You can also learn the Sidewinder, which lets you adjust string tension while the yo-yo is spinning. I teach the Sidewinder step by step in my 5 Beginner Yo-Yo Tricks to Learn Before Your First DNA guide, along with the other foundational tricks I recommend learning before the DNA.

If you don't want to constantly stop and untwist your string while practicing, you can use DNA String. Its built-in swivel prevents string tension from building up, so you can focus on practicing instead of repeatedly resetting your string and work toward smoother, longer, and more consistent DNAs.

Can you do the DNA with any yo-yo?

You can do the DNA trick with many modern yo-yos, but some designs make it much easier than others. A yo-yo with a fingerspin-friendly hub or cup makes it easier to land and center the yo-yo on your finger. Beginners should start with a responsive fingerspin yo-yo like the Vyral then progress to unresponsive yo-yos like the DNA or DNA King for longer spins and more advanced tricks.

Why won’t my DNA yo-yo come back?

If your yo-yo won’t come back after attempting the DNA, first check whether you're using a responsive or unresponsive yo-yo. A responsive yo-yo should return with a tug, while an unresponsive yo-yo requires a bind to return to your hand. If you're using a responsive yo-yo and it still won't return, the problem could be related to the yo-yo's setup, string, bearing, or response system. See my complete Why Won’t My Yo-Yo Come Back? troubleshooting guide for the most common causes and fixes.

Why is my DNA yo-yo trick not working?

If your DNA yo-yo trick isn't working, the most common problems are an incorrect throw angle, not enough spin, rushing the fingerspin, improper hand positioning, or built-up string tension. For the beginner responsive DNA, throw hard at about a 45° angle, raise the yo-yo in front of your belly button as it tilts sideways, let it naturally fall onto your finger, and keep your string hand directly above the yo-yo so the string can catch and form the DNA.

If your string keeps twisting or tangling while you practice, built-up string tension may also be making the DNA harder to perform. You can reset the tension manually, do the sidewinder trick, or use DNA String, which has a built-in swivel that prevents string tension from building up so you can focus on practicing smoother, longer, and more consistent DNAs.

For specific technique fixes, see the DNA Not Working? Common Mistakes & Pro Tips section above.

Why does my DNA yo-yo trick stop spinning?

If your yo-yo loses spin before you can complete the DNA trick, start with your throw. Use a strong throw at about a 45° angle so the yo-yo has enough speed to tilt sideways, land on your finger, and complete the DNA. During the fingerspin, try to land near the center of the hub and keep your finger steady to reduce friction. String tension can also make the DNA harder to complete: if your string becomes overly twisted or tangled, the DNA may not form as smoothly. Yo-yo design matters too. A fingerspin-focused yo-yo like the Vyral, DNA, or DNA King makes it easier to land a centered fingerspin and maintain the spin needed for smoother, longer DNAs.

Why can’t I land the DNA on my finger?

If you can’t land the DNA fingerspin, the problem is usually your throw angle, timing, or finger position. Start with a strong throw at about a 45° angle, raise the yo-yo in front of your belly button, and give it time to naturally tilt sideways. As the yo-yo becomes almost horizontal, line up your pointer finger directly underneath and as close as possible to the center of the fingerspin hub without touching it. Don’t reach for or push your finger into the spinning yo-yo, keep your finger steady and let the yo-yo naturally fall onto it as it finishes tilting over. Once it lands, staying near the center of the hub will help the yo-yo balance and maintain its fingerspin.

Why does my DNA wobble or fall off?

If your yo-yo wobbles or falls off your finger during the DNA, check your throw angle, finger position, and hand alignment. Start with a strong throw at about a 45° angle and give the yo-yo time to naturally tilt sideways. Position your pointer finger underneath the center of the fingerspin hub and let the yo-yo fall naturally onto your finger instead of trying to push or pull your finger into it.

Once the yo-yo lands, keep your finger steady and line up your top hand (the hand the string is attached to) directly above the yo-yo. If your top hand is too far to the side, the string can pull the yo-yo off-center and make the fingerspin wobble or fall off.

Yo-yo design matters too. Some yo-yos don't have a dedicated fingerspin hub or cup, which can make the DNA harder to land and maintain. The Vyral, DNA, and DNA King were designed for different skill levels with the same goal: helping players learn, progress, and eventually master the DNA trick.

Can beginners learn the DNA yo-yo trick?

Yes. This beginner DNA guide was specifically designed to teach new players the easiest way to learn the DNA yo-yo trick. Instead of starting with the more difficult unresponsive version, beginners can learn the core technique with a responsive fingerspin yo-yo, using the step-by-step method above to master the throw, tilt, fingerspin, and hand positioning needed to form the DNA.

For beginners, I recommend the Vyral. Its dedicated fingerspin hub helps your finger lock into place during the fingerspin, while its stable polycarbonate body and responsive setup make it beginner-friendly and easier to control while you're learning.

This is the same method I use to teach players around the world how to land their first DNA.

What is the easiest yo-yo for the DNA trick?

For beginners, I recommend the Vyral as the easiest yo-yo for learning the DNA trick. It comes responsive and ready to learn with, with a dedicated fingerspin hub that helps your finger lock into place and a stable polycarbonate body that makes it easier to control while you're learning.

The responsive setup is what makes the beginner DNA much easier: once you land the fingerspin and line up your top hand correctly, the string can catch and form the DNA automatically instead of requiring an unresponsive bind.

For the easiest setup, pair the Vyral with DNA String. Its built-in swivel prevents string tension from building up as you practice, so you don't have to keep stopping to untwist your string and can focus on learning smoother, longer DNAs.

That’s why the Vyral is the yo-yo I use and recommend for the beginner DNA method taught in this guide.

What yo-yo tricks should I learn before the DNA?

If you're completely new to yo-yoing, start by learning the basics first: how to set up your yo-yo, wind the string, throw a strong sleeper, and practice a few classic beginner yo-yo tricks. These fundamentals will help you build the control you need before moving on to tricks that specifically prepare you for the DNA.

Once you're comfortable with the basics, I recommend learning the Helix, UFO, Sidewinder, and Tornado before attempting your first DNA. Each one teaches a different skill you'll eventually use in the trick, including throwing at an angle, controlling the yo-yo as it tilts, landing a fingerspin, and managing string tension.

You can learn all four in order, then put those skills together to land your first responsive DNA, in my 5 Beginner Yo-Yo Tricks to Learn Before Your First DNA guide.
