If you’re having trouble with the unresponsive DNA, use the tips below to find what’s going wrong and how to fix it.
Why Can’t I Land the Fingerspin?
If you’re having trouble landing the yo-yo on your finger, focus on the pop, finger placement, and centering. Pop the yo-yo up onto your pointer finger and try to land as close to the center of the fingerspin area as possible. If you land too far off-center, the yo-yo can wobble, lose spin, or fall off your finger before you have time to form the DNA.

Keep your pointer finger relaxed but controlled, not too loose or too stiff. Let the yo-yo land onto your finger instead of chasing it or pushing your finger into the yo-yo. A smooth, centered landing gives you more stability and more time for the next step.

Why Can’t I Get the String Into the Gap?
Whipping the string into the gap is one of the trickiest parts of learning the unresponsive DNA, and it takes practice to get the timing and accuracy right. Wait until the yo-yo is stable on your finger, then time your whip so the string goes cleanly into the gap.
If you miss, you can try again as long as the yo-yo still has enough spin. Reset the string, keep the yo-yo balanced on your finger, and make another attempt. As you practice, the timing and whipping motion will become much more consistent.

Once the string enters the gap, don’t pull up too early or wait too long. Give the string a brief moment to get into position, then lightly pull upward so the yo-yo can snag and the DNA can begin to form.
When you’re first learning, focus on timing and accuracy rather than speed. It can also help to practice the whipping motion separately before trying to put the entire trick together. Once the motion starts to feel natural, practice it from the fingerspin.
Why Won’t My Yo-Yo Snag and Form the DNA?
If you’re getting the string into the gap but the DNA still isn’t forming, focus on the timing between the whip and the upward pull. After whipping the string into the gap, give it a brief moment to get into position, then lightly pull up so the yo-yo snags and the DNA begins to form.

If you pull up too early, the string may not have enough time to catch. If you wait too long, too much string can enter the gap and cause the yo-yo to snag or bind incorrectly. The goal is a quick, controlled transition: whip, brief hesitation, then lightly pull up.
As the yo-yo begins to snag, bring your top hand directly above the yo-yo and keep it lined up as the DNA forms. If this part is giving you trouble, practice the whip and upward pull together until the timing starts to feel natural.
Why Does My DNA Bunch Up or Snag?
If your DNA starts to form but then bunches up, snags, or suddenly kills the yo-yo’s spin, too much string may be catching in the gap at once. Focus on getting the string cleanly into the gap and lightly pulling up rather than pulling too hard or allowing too much string to catch at once.
String tension can also be a major cause of messy or inconsistent DNAs. Repeated throws and DNA tricks can make your string increasingly tight or loose, causing it to twist, bunch up, or become harder to control when you whip it into the gap. If your string is no longer hanging cleanly, reset the tension before continuing.

The easiest way to fix string tension is to stop and let the string untwist naturally. As you progress with an unresponsive yo-yo, you can also learn faster ways to adjust tension without stopping, including mini or unresponsive Sidewinders, mount-based tension adjustments, and adjusting the tension as you bind and return the yo-yo. Advanced players even work tension-correcting movements into their combos so they can keep their string closer to neutral while they play.

Why Is My DNA So Short or Why Does It End Too Quickly?
If your DNA forms correctly but doesn’t last very long, the yo-yo may not have enough spin left by the time you reach the DNA. Start with a strong throw so the yo-yo has enough spin to make it through the fingerspin and form the trick.

Your fingerspin also makes a big difference in how long the DNA lasts. The goal is to preserve as much of the yo-yo’s spin as possible while it’s on your finger. A centered fingerspin helps keep the yo-yo stable and reduces unnecessary friction, while keeping the contact point closer to your fingernail can help the yo-yo maintain more of its spin for the DNA.
As the DNA forms, keep your top hand lined up directly above the yo-yo. Proper alignment helps the string wrap into a cleaner, more controlled spiral instead of forming unevenly.

String length matters too. Make sure your yo-yo string is adjusted to the right length for you. A string that’s too long or too short can make it harder to control your hand positioning, whip the string accurately, and keep everything aligned as the DNA forms.

Finally, keep your string tension neutral. Practicing the DNA over and over can cause the string to become too tight or too loose, making it twist, bunch up, or become harder to control. Why Does the Yo-Yo Fall Off My Finger?
If you can land the fingerspin but the yo-yo keeps falling off your finger, focus on keeping the yo-yo balanced once it lands and avoiding movements that pull it out of position. If the yo-yo starts drifting toward the edge of the fingerspin area, it can become unstable, wobble, and eventually fall off your finger.

Don’t try to force the yo-yo back toward the center with sudden movements. Keep your fingerspin hand steady and make small, controlled adjustments as the yo-yo moves. The goal is to stay balanced underneath the spinning yo-yo rather than chasing it with your finger.
Pay attention to your string hand too. Remember that the yo-yo is still connected to your opposite hand while it’s spinning on your finger. Keep enough space between your hands to control the string without pulling the yo-yo off your finger, and don’t let the string fall underneath the yo-yo. Your string-hand position becomes especially important as you prepare to whip the string into the gap.

Make sure you’re starting with enough spin too. The yo-yo loses speed while it’s on your finger, and as it slows down, maintaining a stable fingerspin becomes more difficult. A strong throw gives you more time to stabilize the fingerspin and move into the next part of the DNA.

Keep the fingerspin stable and centered throughout the transition too. If the yo-yo is wobbling or moving around on your finger as the string begins to wrap, it will be harder to create a clean, controlled DNA.
Once the DNA starts forming, don’t try to force the spiral into place. Keep your movements controlled and your top hand aligned directly above the yo-yo. A stable fingerspin, clean catch, and proper hand alignment will help the DNA form into a straighter, more even spiral.
Why Does the String Wrap Around My Finger During the DNA?
If the string starts wrapping around your fingerspin finger during the DNA, it usually means the string has fallen underneath or touched the bottom half of the spinning yo-yo. Once that happens, the yo-yo can catch the string and pull it around your finger, causing the trick to snag, stop, or wrap tightly around your hand.
To prevent this, pay close attention to your throw-hand position and the amount of slack in the string. Keep your throw hand far enough away and slightly raised so the string stays clear of the bottom half of the yo-yo while you’re fingerspinning. You want the loose string under control until you deliberately whip it toward the gap.
When you make the whip, aim cleanly toward the yo-yo rather than letting the slack fall underneath it. Keeping your hands properly spaced and moving your throw hand up at the right time can help prevent the string from dropping below the yo-yo and wrapping around your finger.
Also make sure your string tension is neutral. Excess string tension can make the slack harder to control and less predictable during the whip. If the string does fall underneath or starts wrapping around your finger, don’t force the DNA, stop the attempt, reset, and try again.
Why Can I Do the DNA Sometimes but Not Consistently?
If you can land the DNA sometimes but not consistently, you probably understand the trick, but the individual movements haven’t become repeatable yet. The unresponsive DNA combines several skills in a very short amount of time. The throw, fingerspin, hand positioning, whip, timing, catch, and upward pull all have to come together smoothly.
Instead of changing everything at once, pay attention to what is different when you miss. Are you landing the fingerspin off-center? Is your string hand in a different position? Are you missing the gap? Are you pulling up too early or too late? Identifying the part that changes from attempt to attempt will help you figure out what actually needs more practice.
It can also help to practice individual parts of the trick separately. Get comfortable landing and holding a stable fingerspin before worrying about the DNA, and practice the whip and bind motion on their own until they start to feel natural. 
Most importantly, give yourself time and keep practicing. Landing the DNA once means you’ve started to understand the motion; landing it consistently comes from repeating those movements until the timing and hand positioning become natural.
Pro Tips for a Longer, Cleaner Unresponsive DNA
Once you can land the unresponsive DNA, these small adjustments can help make it longer, cleaner, and more consistent:
- Start with a strong, controlled throw. More spin gives you more time to land the fingerspin, stabilize the yo-yo, and form the DNA.
- Stay centered and relaxed. Land as close to the center of the fingerspin area as possible and keep your finger relaxed but controlled.
- Reduce friction on the fingerspin. Try to keep the contact point closer to your fingernail so the yo-yo can maintain its spin longer.
- Keep your top hand directly above the yo-yo. Good alignment helps the string form a cleaner, straighter DNA instead of pulling to one side.
