In most cases, the bearing simply needs to be cleaned. After cleaning, I recommend applying a tiny amount of thin yo-yo bearing lubricant before installing a fresh string and testing your yo-yo again.
If you've cleaned the bearing two or three times, applied a small amount of lubricant, installed a fresh string, and it's still rough, unusually noisy, losing spin time, or becoming unexpectedly responsive, the bearing may be worn or damaged and need to be replaced.
Fortunately, this is uncommon. Most noisy bearings can be restored with proper cleaning and routine maintenance rather than replacement.
Can I Make My Yo-Yo Quieter?
Yes. If your yo-yo is performing normally but you'd simply like it to be quieter, applying a tiny amount of thin yo-yo bearing lubricant can often reduce the noise. It can also help the bearing run more smoothly while providing additional protection against wear and corrosion.
If your yo-yo has suddenly become much louder than usual or its performance has changed, clean the bearing first. After cleaning, I recommend applying a tiny amount of thin yo-yo bearing lubricant before testing your yo-yo again.
