What is the DNA, Where Did It Come From, and How Do You Do It?

This trick needs no introduction because every yo-yo player, from all over the world, recognizes it... THE DNA. Once upon a time, tricks like Walk the Dog or Rock the Baby defined yo-yoing, but today the question everyone asks is: "Can you do the DNA?"

The DNA Explained

The DNA is a modern finger spin trick inspired by the classic Sidewinder and Thumb Grind. After throwing the yo-yo down, you balance it on your fingertip, then wrap the string so it catches and spirals back up to your hand.

History of the DNA Yo-Yo Trick

There's a lot of confusion online about where the DNA trick really came from, so let's set the record straight. Like most great yo-yo tricks, the DNA didn't just magically appear overnight, it evolved with time.

In the 1950s, it all started with the Sidewinder, the first helix-style yo-yo trick.

Then fast forward to 2004 and legendary yoyo player, André Boulay, took things a step further by combining the mechanics of Sidewinder with a finger grind creating one of the earliest true finger spins, paving the way of what would later become the DNA.

Throughout the 2010s, a few players experimented with helix style finger spins, but the trick still didn't have an official name. Then, on August 1st in 2020, everything was about to change..

I posted this version of the trick on TikTok, and it went viral overnight. From there, the yo-yo trick exploded on social media and players from all over the world began posting their own versions of the DNA trick online

Today, DNA videos have surpassed a billion views. What began as a viral moment has evolved into a global movement. This single trick sparked an entirely new era of yo-yoing which changed the sport forever.

How the DNA Going Viral Changed Yo-Yoing Forever

The DNA didn't just spread because it looked cool, it gained a following because it was inclusive. Anyone could attempt it, share it, and become a part of something bigger.

Why Is It Called the "DNA" Yo-Yo Trick?

As mentioned earlier, this trick didn’t have an official name at first. “The DNA” came from a TikTok comment where someone noticed the spiraling string looked like a DNA strand. The comparison caught on quickly, and players around the world started calling this finger spin variation “the DNA.

Responsive Vs. Unresponsive DNA Tricks

You can actually do the DNA with both responsive and unresponsive yo-yos, typically beginners learn the responsive version on a plastic yoyo, like the Arrow, while more advanced players can take it to the next level by using a professional unresponsive metal yoyo like the DNA or the Dna King.

DNA and Arrow yo-yos for DNA trick

💡 Pro Tip: If you start with the Arrow, it comes responsive out of the package and is perfect for learning your first DNA but once you've mastered that, you don't even need to buy a new yoyo, you can just swap in the included extra bearing to instantly switch to unresponsive.

The DNA isn’t just one trick, learning it and all of its variations is a journey.
If you’re just starting out, check out my tutorial 5 Beginner DNA Tricks. Which will help you build the exact skills you need to work your way up to the full DNA trick.

Once you’ve mastered those, you’ll be ready to take the next step, learning the Responsive DNA.

Step by Step: How to do the Responsive DNA

Every player starts learning the DNA the same way, by mastering the throw angle and finger catch. Then once you’ve got those down, follow these steps:

Step 1: Throw the yo-yo at a 45 degree angle.
Step 2: Guide the yo-yo onto your finger using the finger spin cap.
Step 3: Keep your string hand above the yo-yo to maintain control.

And from there, you’ll be landing the responsive DNA in no time! You can watch the video tutorial here

Switching from Responsive to Unresponsive DNA

Once you've mastered the responsive DNA, it's time to take things to the next level. This is when it helps to upgrade your setup. If you are using the arrow yo-yo you can just swap out the extra bearing that came it.

You can learn the DNA on almost any yo-yo, but as the trick evolved, I set out to design yo-yos that make it easier to learn and progress into more advanced variations. The DNA and the DNA King were engingeered specifically to help you level up your DNA and other finger spin tricks.

Step by Step: How to do the Unresponsive DNA

The unresponsive DNA is a bit more advanced than the responsive version, but with just a little patience and practice, you’ll get it down in no time!  To make it easier, here’s a simple 7 step breakdown to help you learn it.

Step 1: Throw at about a 45 degree angle
Start with a clean, powerful sideways throw. This gives you enough spin for the full DNA.

Step 2: Land in the finger spin
Guide the yo-yo onto your finger, aiming for the finger spin cap. Keep your hand steady.

Step 3: Keep your string hand above
Your throw hand should stay slightly above the yo-yo to keep everything centered.

Step 4: Let the string wrap (the “DNA”)
Gently move your finger so the string starts wrapping around the axle, forming the iconic 'dna' strand.

    Step 5: Control the spin
Stay relaxed and centered, small adjustments keep the spin smooth and prevent wobble.

    Step 6: Unwind the DNA
Tilt your finger slightly or guide the string off so it unwraps cleanly.

    Step 7: Bind to return
Bind horizontally to bring the yo-yo back to your hand.

If you’re still working on it, check out the common mistakes section below, but if you’ve already got it down, keep scrolling to learn advanced DNA trick variations.

Common Mistakes in the DNA Yo-Yo Trick (And How to Fix Them)

If you're having trouble landing the DNA, don’t worry, this is where many players get stuck at first. It might look easy when an advanced player does it, but there are a few beginner mistakes that almost everyone makes at first.

Common mistakes when learning DNA yo-yo trick

Weak Throw: Not enough spin can make the yo-yo unstable. Focus on getting a strong throw to give the yo-yo more stability and control.

Using the Wrong Yo-Yo: Not every yo-yo is designed for finger spin tricks. Make sure you're using one built for the DNA, like the Arrow for responsive play, or if you are a more intermediate/ advanced player, the Official DNA and DNA King

Wrong Throw Angle: Throwing at a bad angle can make or break this trick, so aim for about 45 degrees.

Bad Finger Placement: Keep your fingertip straight because if it isn't then the yoyo will fall off.

Pulling Too Early or Hard: When doing the unresponsive DNA, be patient when whipping the string and don't rush your bind at the end.

String Tension: Twisted or tight string tension can mess you up when doing the DNA. You can reset string tension with a trick called the sidewinder or a secret hack most pro players use is the official DNA string. Its patented swivel technology keeps your string perfectly neutral for longer, smoother DNAs.

Quick Tips to Master the DNA

Learning the DNA can feel difficult at first, don't worry thats normal. If you feel frustrated, just remember to take your time, focus on the basicsand you'll land it in no time.

Below is a recap of some of the most important tips when learning the DNA.

Master your throw: The stronger and cleaner your throw is, the more spin and stability you'll have to work with.

Refine Angle and Thumb Position: The smallest angle changes make a huge difference. Adjust the angle until the yo-yo feels stable and centered on your nail.

Choose the Right Yo-Yo: Start with wide and stable models with a finger spin cap made for mastering the DNA. For beginners, I recommend the Arrow, and for more advanced players, the DNA or DNA King.

Practice Smarter not Harder: Improvement comes from focused, intentional practice, not endless hours of throwing.

Watch yourself: Film yourself and watch the footage back to find small details to refine.

Level Up Gradually: Don't rush the process, first master the basics and the unresponsive DNA before moving onto more advanced variations.

What yo-yo is best for the DNA trick?

Not every yo-yo is designed for finger spins, but the right model makes learning and mastering the DNA so much easier. Here are the best options for yo-yos depending on your skill level:

For Beginners – The Arrow: It's responsive out of the box, and when you're ready to progress, simply install the extra unresponsive bearing included to upgrade your play instantly.

For Intermediate Players – The DNA: Affordable, wide, and built with special finger spin caps that make locking onto your nail effortless. Perfect for learning the trick smoothly.

For Advanced Players – DNA King: The ultimate premium DNA yo-yo with a metal self centering cap for longer, more stable spins, and advanced DNA variations. This is the yo-yo pros use to push the trick further.

A fingerspin cap that locks onto your fingertip, plus a wide catch zone and stable shape for longer spins and control.

What's the best budget yo-yo for DNAs?
If you are just starting out on your yo-yo journey then the Arrow is the best cheap option for a beginner yo-yo to learn the DNA on. If you have already mastered responsive DNA then you can level up with either The DNA or The DNA King which are both affordable professional models that were made for mastering this trick.

Can kids learn the DNA trick?
Absolutely! There is no age limit to learning this trick but first you have to learn the basics of yo-yoing. If you are a beginner then the best way to learn is with the Arrow yoyo which starts responsive but comes with an extra bearing so you can later make it unresponsive.

    Strings & Setup

What string should I use for the DNA?
Polyester string is best for DNAs because it's durable and holds tension well. The Official DNA String has a patented swivel that automatically keeps tension neutral and its available in short and long versions.

What is string tension and how does it affect the DNA?
To put it simply, string tension is how twisted your string gets. Keeping neutral tension is key, too tight and it snags, too loose and it slips.

Why does my yo-yo "die" during the DNA?
That's almost always string tension. Use a quick Sidewinder throw to reset it, or a secret hack is to use DNA String and with its patented swivel technology you can avoid this problem.

Can I use regular string for the DNA?
Yes, but you'll need to learn how to manage your string tension. There are tricks like the sidewinder that can help but the easiest way to hit the DNA and have no string tension is by using the official DNA string.

    DNA Yo-Yos and Contests

Why doesn't my DNA trick work?
There are many reasons why you can't hit the DNA yet but don't worry! Most people have trouble at first. Most issues come from weak throws, bad angles, or string tension but check the Common Mistakes section above for quick fixes.

What's the hardest part of learning the DNA?
The hardest part will depending on your level of yo-yoing but some common challenges are getting consistent on your throw angle and balancing it on your fingertip. Once those are mastered, everything else becomes a little bit easier.

Does the DNA trick score points in yo-yo contests?
The DNA is not a high scoring yo-yo trick at contests but it is still a fan favorite so many players include it in their world winning routines.
