Imagine grabbing your yo-yo mid-spin… and it keeps moving.
Imagine turning it fully sideways… and it never spins out.
Imagine rolling it across your hand like it’s floating.
Those aren’t special effects, they’re real tricks you can do but only with the Nine Dragons yoyo.
In this tutorial, I’m going to teach you 3 of these ‘impossible’ yo-yo tricks.
And don't worry, these might look hard, but as long as you have some modern yo-yo experience, you’ll be able to learn them all! But before you get started make sure to check out my video How to do Nine Dragons Yo-Yo Tricks, where I walk you through the basics of throwing, catching, and controlling the Nine Dragons so you can build the right foundation before learning tricks.
Ready to learn? Let's get started!
Trick #1: The Rolling Dragon

How to do The Rolling Dragon:
- Throw front style and immediately push your non throw hand pointer into the string.
- Bring your throw hand below, line the string with the yo-yo gap, and catch.
- Pretend throw forward and let the yo-yo roll smoothly onto the string.
- Swing forward like a boomerang, catch, and repeat a few times before binding.
Trick #2: The Dragon Flight

How to do The Dragon Flight:
- Side throw into a trapeze.
- Move the loop to your throw-hand pointer finger.
- Lightly pinch the yo-yo back and tilt it horizontal by lifting up.
- Swing toward yourself for three rotations.
- Curl your finger, flip your hand down, and do three more rotations.
- Catch, flip upright, and whip bind.
Trick #3: The Serpent Circle

How to do The Serpent Circle:
- Start in a trapeze, pop and catch in your opposite hand.
- Wrap your throw-hand pointer so the string hangs over the top.
- Whip so the back string hits the gap.
- Swing into a mini trapeze over both strings.
- Cross your opposite hand, catch, switch grips.
- Swing a full circle, catch, switch again.
- Pop up, drop the loop, and pull down to bind.
The Famous Nine Dragons Yo-Yo Battle
If you really want to see what the Nine Dragons can do, check out the Impossible Trick Battle, I filmed with YouTuber Lucas Decker and Australian National Champion Brandon Vu. We pushed the Nine Dragons to its limits with rolling tricks, horizontals, and creative ideas that even surprised us.

Where to Get a Nine Dragons Yo-Yo
If you want to learn these “impossible” tricks yourself, you can’t just use any yo-yo. You need the Nine Dragons. Its free spinning shell technology lets you pull off grabbing, rolling and other tricks that would be literally impossible on a normal yo-yo.
It doesn’t just change what tricks you can do, it opens an entirely new style of yo-yoing.

The Next Evolution of the Nine Dragons: The 99 Dragons
In 2026, we pushed the design even further with the 99 Dragons, a bimetal evolution of the Nine Dragons built for maximum performance.

The secret? Stainless steel rims.
This one upgrade gives the yo-yo a huge boost in power, spin time, and rock-solid stability. The lightweight polycarbonate shells keep the body fast and agile, while the steel rims deliver the strength and precision modern players need for long, demanding combos.
Find the Yo-Yo That Helps You Become a Champion
After exploring the Nine Dragons and the 99 Dragons, you’ve probably realized something important:
Yo-yos aren’t just equipment, they’re tools for growth.
I’ve been yo-yoing for over 20 years. I’ve competed all over the world, won multiple U.S. National titles, and became a 2x World Yo-Yo Champion but eventually I learned something bigger than any trophy...

My passion was competing but my purpose is helping other players become champions in their own lives.
Not champions because of medals or rankings,
but because they show up, never give up, and lift others up.
That’s the heart of YoYoChampion.
Every yo-yo in my collection exists for one reason:
to help you grow, no matter where you’re starting.

Whether you’re learning your first sleeper, chasing your first DNA, practicing Godspeed speed combos, or exploring advanced creative styles like the Nine Dragons, there’s a yo-yo built to meet you where you are and challenge you to go one step further.
Because becoming a champion isn’t about titles.
It’s about who you become each time you pick up your yo-yo.

Nine Dragons Yo-Yo FAQ
Is the Nine Dragons Yo-Yo responsive?
No, the Nine Dragons is an unresponsive yo-yo, meaning it won't return to your hand with a tug. You'll need to perform a bind return to bring it back. That's what allows for longer spins, complex tricks, and the unique rolling moves that make the Nine Dragons so different.
Can you do normal yo-yo tricks with the Nine Dragons?
Absolutely. Even though it's designed for free spinning play, the Nine Dragons works just like a high quality unresponsive yo-yo. You can throw sleepers, practice combos, and do your usual string tricks any time.
What makes the Nine Dragons different from a regular yo-yo?
It features free spinning outer shells that let you grab, roll, or redirect the yo-yo mid-trick without losing spin. This design completely changes what's possible in modern yo-yoing. To dive deeper into how it works, check out The Ultimate Guide to the Nine Dragons Yo-Yo.
Why does the Nine Dragons make noise?
That's totally normal. The sound comes from the free spinning shells moving independently from the inner body. It's part of what makes the Nine Dragons so unique, and many players actually find the sound satisfying, it's the noise of innovation in motion.
Which yo-yo should I try after the Nine Dragons?
If you're working on DNA tricks, the DNA Yo-Yo or DNA King are great next steps. For power and competition-style play, try the Super G or G-Force.
